Happy New Year to our reader. This picture was taken three days ago during a brief sleeping bout. You might be able to spot the changes in her face already compared to the earlier photos. Then again, that sort of thing is only interesting to a restricted few! But it does make you think about what makes babies the same thing from day to day until they get to their first full-blown tantrum, get to bring Mummy breakfast in bed, steal their first car etc.
When we are embarassing her with these photos in front of her friends in years to come, will she be the same person then as she is now? Put like that, it sounds stupid. When she's eighteen she won't be still lying around in bed at three in the afternoon waiting for Mum to fetch her dinner, then throwing it up all over her. . . (Will she?) What I mean is, what will make her the same person?
A soul? Too metaphysical. Bodily continuity? Cells get replaced all the time. Psychological connections? She won't remember any of this in ten years time. Just what Daddy says I am? Actually that sounds about right. Don't ask me what personal identity is try arguing with the CRS that you aren't who they think you are and then do the philosophy essay....
